Freelance Business Management Software: 2026 Comparison (Bonsai vs. HoneyBook vs. Moxie vs. Zenaris)
What this category of tool typically includes
"Freelance business management software" usually means some combination of CRM, proposals and contracts, invoicing and payments, and time tracking, sold as a single subscription instead of five separate tools. Bonsai, HoneyBook, and Moxie are the three names that come up most often in this comparison, and for good reason — they're all mature products with real feature depth. Here's how they actually stack up, with pricing verified directly from each vendor's site as of July 2026.
Bonsai
Bonsai is priced per user across four tiers: Basic at $15/month, Essentials at $25/month, Premium at $39/month, and Elite at $59/month (annual billing brings each of those down 30-40%). The Basic tier covers time tracking, task management, and CRM, but you have to move up to Essentials before you get invoicing, payments, proposals, contracts, or expense tracking — which means the plan most solo freelancers would actually sign up for based on price doesn't include billing.
Strengths: broad feature set, genuinely good project and client management, solid for teams that need workload views and Gantt charts at the Premium tier.
Gaps: per-user pricing scales badly if you ever bring on a subcontractor or VA, and the useful stuff is gated behind the second tier up, not the first.
HoneyBook
HoneyBook runs $29/month (Starter), $49/month (Essentials), or $109/month (Premium) on annual billing — noticeably more on month-to-month. Every tier includes "HoneyBook AI," which is a generative-text assistant for drafting client messages and proposals inside their editor. HoneyBook's core strength is the lead-to-payment pipeline: forms, proposals, contracts, and scheduling built around booking and managing new client relationships.
Strengths: best-in-class for service businesses whose growth depends on converting leads (photographers, event planners, agencies with active sales pipelines). The AI writing assistant is a real convenience for proposal-heavy workflows.
Gaps: HoneyBook's 2025 price hikes were steep — the Starter plan alone went up 89% — and pricing was clearly aimed at businesses with recurring lead flow, not solo consultants with a handful of retainer clients. There's no expense tracking to speak of, and "HoneyBook AI" writes text inside their app; it doesn't read or act on your actual business data.
Moxie
Moxie is the cheapest of the three and markets itself directly at solo freelancers: Starter at $10/month, Pro at $20/month, and Teams at $32/month on annual billing (about 20% more month-to-month). Even the Starter tier includes CRM, invoicing, contracts, time tracking, and a built-in AI assistant — more included at the entry tier than either Bonsai or HoneyBook offers at theirs.
Strengths: genuinely comprehensive for the price, irreverent brand voice that a lot of freelancers find refreshing after years of stiff "enterprise-lite" software, and the best value of the three if you want everything in one place without paying for a team tier you don't need.
Gaps: "basic accounting" covers expense tracking, but it's exactly that — basic, with no dedicated rebilling workflow the way FreshBooks or Zenaris have. No notes or knowledge-base layer at all.
Where all three share a blind spot
Put the three side by side and the same two gaps show up every time:
- No notes or knowledge layer. None of the three has anywhere to put the context around a client relationship — what was discussed, agreed, or promised — that isn't a CRM field or a project description. That knowledge either lives in your email, or it doesn't get captured at all.
- No native AI-assistant integration. HoneyBook AI and Moxie's assistant are both in-app copywriting helpers — they draft text inside the vendor's own interface. None of the three lets your own AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, or anything else) actually read your client data or take action on it. The "AI" in this category currently means "helps you write," not "knows your business."
Where Zenaris fits
| Tool | Starting price | Notes/knowledge base | Expense rebilling | Native AI-assistant integration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bonsai | $15/mo (billing needs Essentials, $25/mo) | No | Basic, Essentials+ | No |
| HoneyBook | $29/mo | No | No | No (in-app AI writing only) |
| Moxie | $10/mo | No | Basic | No (in-app AI assistant only) |
| Zenaris | $12/mo Standard; $29/mo Pro (30-day free trial) | Yes, with AI semantic search | Yes, one-click rebill | Yes — MCP connects Claude or ChatGPT directly |
Zenaris is priced comparably to Moxie at the low end and meaningfully cheaper than HoneyBook, but the actual differentiator isn't price — it's the two things missing from every competitor above. Notes are a first-class part of the client record, not an afterthought, and the AI layer isn't a chatbot bolted onto the interface — it's a protocol-level connection (MCP) that lets an assistant you already use read your real data and act on it with your approval.
What Zenaris doesn't do (yet)
Fair comparisons cut both ways. Bonsai, HoneyBook, and Moxie all include proposal-and-contract workflows with e-signatures and, in HoneyBook and Moxie's case, lead-capture forms and booking pipelines built for turning inbound inquiries into signed clients. Zenaris doesn't currently do any of that — it's built around the work you already have (invoicing, expenses, tasks, notes) rather than the sales motion that gets you the work in the first place. If your business runs on a steady stream of new inbound leads you need to qualify and convert, none of what's above changes that you may still want a dedicated tool, or one of these three, for that specific job.
The honest caveat
If your business is genuinely lead-generation-heavy — you're running a sales pipeline with forms, proposals, and a real "book more clients" motion — HoneyBook's purpose-built tooling for that will likely outperform anything here, Zenaris included. And if you want the widest possible feature surface at the cheapest entry price and don't care about notes or AI integration, Moxie is a legitimately strong pick. This comparison isn't "everyone else is bad" — it's that the second-brain and AI-native gaps are real, and as of mid-2026, Zenaris is the only one of the four that fills them.
